The BMW 7 Series E38 1994-2001 instrument clusters are known to have common problems with pixels on the display, eventually leaving them unreadable. Once pixels start to fade on these units they will continue to lose pixels until the ribbon cables and sometimes the LCD are replaced correctly.

What Causes These Issues ?
These issues are caused by heat and stress on the ribbon cables used by the manufacturer. Once they begin to lose connections between the PCB and the LCD the pixels will start to fade and, eventually, no pixels will be visible.
